The 11th Annual CUNA CFO Council Conference and Roundtable: Don’t Miss It!

There’s still plenty of time to clear your schedule so you can attend the 2005 CUNA CFO Council in Washington, D.C. from May 15 to May 18. From an address on the state of credit union politics and legislation to a memorable evening at the Russian Embassy, the 2005 conference promises to offer a solid return on your investment.

Agenda

Sunday, May 15

John Molenda, CFO of the Sandia Area FCU in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will present a session on ALM model back testing. John will take a close look at model validation through back testing in a best practices-type environment. Emphasis will be placed upon testing previously generated “most likely” rate scenarios as compared to the actuals experienced during the various forecast cycles. He will also discuss how to perform core deposit studies according to best practices, especially regarding modeling underlying cash flows.

Of course, a conference isn’t as much fun if it’s all work and no play. Take the afternoon off to participate in the golf tournament at the Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge. This challenging, 72-par course was designed by Tim Freeland, who has worked with Gary Player and other championship golfers. Registration is limited to the first 60 players.

Monday, May 16

The keynote speaker in the morning is Senator JoAnn Johnson, board chairman of NCUA, who will discuss major issues facing credit unions. She will also facilitate a question-and-answer session.

Morning breakout sessions will address advanced investment portfolio strategies, how to measure branch profitability, leadership skill development, and liquidity management strategies. Afternoon workshops tackle the economics of indirect lending and ALM modeling.

For a taste of the international, don’t miss the exciting cocktail reception and dinner at the Russian Embassy Monday evening, which will feature exquisite Russian fare, ornate architecture, and Russian music and dancing.

Tuesday, May 17

Dan Mica, president and CEO of CUNA, is the opening speaker and will discuss the state of credit union politics and legislation.

Morning breakout sessions include how to use hedging and derivatives to mitigate risk, the latest accounting rules and regulations, new regulatory requirements, and the benefits of offering self-insured medical plans and HSAs.

The early afternoon session will feature a lively discussion by esteemed economists Don Ratajczak (Morgan Keegan & Company) and Bill Hampel (senior president and chief economist with CUNA) regarding the future trends of interest rates, loan demand, deposit growth, and overall economic performance.

Scott Waite, chair of the CUNA CFO Council, and other executive committee members will facilitate a roundtable discussion in the late afternoon regarding key issues facing credit unions.

Wednesday, May 18

Morning sessions will address fee income and the pros and cons of offering business services to members. The closing session from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. is presented by motivational speaker Mark Adams, who will enlighten the audience about ways to maximize sales, customer service, and management/leadership training.
