CFO Brad Barnes Took a Pass on the Courage Classic this Year—Fremont Pass, that Is!Because credit unions are all about “people helping people,” it's essential for credit union employees to get involved in community events—especially execs who are less in the public eye. “Getting involved is important for me personally, but also for the credit union I represent,” says Brad Barnes, vice president of finance for Air Academy Federal Credit Union in Colorado Springs. “Outreach is one of our five core values. We take it seriously, but we also have a lot of fun doing it. It's a great opportunity to interact with co-workers outside the work environment.” One of the biggest fundraising events for Air Academy is the Courage Classic, a three-day, 203-mile bike ride through the spectacular Colorado Rockies— over Tennessee Pass, up Vail Pass, down through Copper Mountain and Dillon, then up Fremont Pass. The money raised is given to the Children's Hospital in Denver. “It's a challenging workout with 13,000 feet of climbing,” says Brad. Initially, the Credit Union Association of Colorado was very active in supporting the bike ride. However, they changed their focus several years ago. “A lot of credit unions still participate, though—it shows their continued commitment to outreach,” says Brad. “I did my first three-day ride in 2000 and just loved it. This year our team had 26 riders and we raised about $24,000.” Overall, the 2007 ride generated over $2 million for the Children's Hospital. One of the things Brad enjoys the most about the ride is the time he has to reflect. “It's nice to be alone with just my thoughts,” he comments. “I lost my infant nephew two years ago, so I feel very strongly about this cause. I know the money we raise will help other sick children and their families, and that's very important to me.” Brad recommends getting involved in community events. “Everyone enjoys giving back and helping a good cause,” he adds. “It feels great. You meet new people. All that energy, camaraderie and good will brings out the best in everyone, and makes the community stronger.” CommentsPowered by Comment Script
