Communications Committee

Chair - Bill Kennedy
Vice Chair - Sonya Janes

Mission – Provide oversight for valuable website content and other communication tools while ensuring the visibility of the Council is prominent throughout the credit union industry.
Key Functions

  • Ensure list serve functions as a respectful networking environment.
  • Ensure web content and design as a top-of-mind resource for member needs.
  • Ensure quality networking opportunities at other industry events and assist the conference committee with input on conference networking activities.
  • Facilitate articles for publications, including providing input on CUNA's annual E-Scan.
  • Monitor and promote the overall reputation and visibility of the Council throughout the industry, i.e. press releases.
  • Manage file library and ensure material remains relevant.

Time Commitment – Average of one to two hours per month over the course of the year, including bi-monthly conference calls of 60 minutes each.
Annual Goals – The CFO Council Communications Committee has the following goals for 2012:

  • Revisit website content and design
  • Post articles on current topics to website
  • Promote the integrity of the use of member list serve
  • Provide input to Credit Union Magazine and other industry publications
  • Increase visibility of Council throughout credit union industry
  • Encourage the use of Zoomerang web polls
  • Update content of file library

Action Items – To achieve those goals the following activities/timing will take place, with the support of the committee members and CUNA staff –

Website: Encourage participation in advanced networking resources on website and CUNA Councils Connect. Explore opportunities for in-depth articles on current topics posted to website. Work with Christopher Morris’ replacement to help ensure web content and design is a top-of-mind resource for member needs.

List Serve: Consider content of listserv postings and stimulate thoughtful discussion as needed. Investigate and respond as appropriate to member breaches of the listserv rules of the road.

Publications: Identify topics and seek authors from the membership to provide input to CU Magazine Editorial Board and other industry publications.

Council Visibility: Consider opportunities to increase visibility of Council through press releases, credit union venues and input to industry publications.

File Library: Manage file library and ensure material remains relevant.

Conference Committee

Chair - Jason Peach
Vice Chair - Bryanna Tapley

Mission – To create an event that is well attended, achieves high ratings from attendees for content and networking, and meets or exceeds budgeted financial targets. 

Key Functions

  • Identify the conference theme, direction and speakers
  • Identify topics for the agenda that are timely and relevant to Council members
  • Identify and contact speakers that can cover desired topics
  • Provide feedback and suggestions on potential networking, social activities and other value-added benefits for attendees
  • Promote the conference to members and other potential attendees
  • Assist speakers in clarifying session content and direction
  • Introduce speakers during the conference
  • Identify and contact vendors for conference sponsorships.

Time commitment – 12-15 conference calls (60 minutes each). Commitment starts at the close of the previous year’s conference.  Much of the work takes place 10 – 5 months prior to the conference date.

Annual Goal – The CFO Council Conference Committee has the following goals for 2012:

  • Achieving a minimum overall satisfaction rating of 4.5 on a scale of 1-5;
  • 220 paid conference attendees; $191,000 in income from conference sponsors.

Action Items – To achieve those goals the following activities/timing will take place, with the support of the committee members and CUNA staff –

  • Mark your calendar completed and sent by end of December 2011
  • Conference format determined and session topics identified by December 2011
  • Online registration and preliminary information available on-line by Early January 2012
  • Speakers confirmed, agenda completed and promotional pieces mailed by Early January ‘12
  • Assignments made for introducers / moderators by May 1 2012
  • Initial contacts to potential sponsors by June 2011 – March 2012; follow-up contacts and commitments from current sponsors by November 2011.

Education Committee

Chair - Suzanne Weinstein
Vice Chair - Sonya Jaynes

Mission – Assist in the development, review and promotion of finance-related educational resources.

Key Functions

  • Collaborating with CUNA’s Center for Professional Development (CPD) to evaluate educational curricula, schools and certification program.
  • Work with CPD to create and promote webinars of interest to Council members.
  • Work with CUNA and Council staff to raise the awareness of educational resources with Council members, potential members and individuals eligible for CFO Council scholarships.
  • Review /provide input on educational and research publications.
  • Produce Financial Flashes, White Papers, Webinars and Virtual Roundtables to provide education to Council members.
  • Present at or monitor educational programs.

Time Commitment Varies depending on established goals. Monthly conference calls (60 minutes each) plus 1-4 additional hours per month throughout the year, more if an individual is involved in monitoring or presenting.  Also more for the committee chairman.    

Annual Goals – The CFO Council Education Committee has the following goals for 2012:

  • Produce at least 10 educational pieces through the year.  This is any combination of webinars, white papers, virtual roundtables and financial flashes.
  • Provide input on curriculum of CUNA’s Financial Management School (Parts 1-3)
  • Have a presence at each of the finance-related live events conducted by CUNA.

Action Items – To achieve these goals the committee will receive input from the Executive Committee on key topics that should be addressed.  Armed with this info and with the support of committee members and CUNA staff, educational material will be developed and presented to the CFO Council membership.

Membership Committee

Chair - Kevin P. Brueseke

MissionTo attract new members and retain current members.

Key FunctionsDevelop strategies and take actions that foster membership involvement, retention and growth. 

  • Support efforts to attract new members
  • Support member retention efforts
  • Determine actions /resources to increase and enhance member involvement (in coordination with Benefits committee)
  • Promote Council memberships at industry events
  • Leverage league relationships

Time CommitmentMonthly conference calls (30-60 minutes each) during November to April time period.  As needed during rest of year depending on goals.   Additional time to conduct phone calls, e-mails and other contacts as determined by the committee.

Annual Goals The CFO Council membership committee has the following goals for 2012:

      • 90% (1007) Member Retention
      • 143 new members
      • 1150 Paid members by September 14, 2012
      • Establish and employ strategies to increase and retain membership

Action Items – To achieve those goals the following activities/timing will take place, with the support of the committee members and CUNA staff –

Retention: E-mails, calls or letters to non-renewed parties during November 2011 – April 2012.
Member promotion: Membership promotional mailings in fourth quarter of ’11 and first quarter of ’12 in conjunction with conference promotional mailings. Additional mailings that promote the CFO Council to go to prospects that attend other CUNA events during the year (CUNA Management School; Financial Management School; Economics & Investment Conference).
Member Involvement: New members will be personally contacted by Councils staff and by committee members during the first two months after they have joined to answer questions, encourage participation and solicit feedback.  This is an ongoing activity, but most heavily needed during November - April timeframe.
Overall Benefits: Committee to discuss overall member benefits, potential additions and ways to add value to current membership benefits.

Regulatory Committee

Chair - Mary Torsney
Vice Chair - John Meeker

Mission – To remain alert to potential regulatory, legislative and accounting standard issues related to the credit union finance professional's position and to provide educational resources to assist council members in commenting on those issues . 

Key Functions

  • Collaborating with Council administration, CUNA Washington staff, NCUA and other sources to identify opportunities for comment
  • Helping coordinate the collection of comments from Council membership
  • Generating awareness and action on issues of interest

Time Commitment – Operates on an as-needed basis. Plan 3-4 hours per month throughout the year, unless special issues arise.

Annual Goals – The CFO Council Regulatory Committee has the following goals for 2010:

  • Alert council members to relevant issues, make available educational resources where necessary and provide an opportunity for council members to express thoughts and concerns from a CFO or credit union perspective on position-relevant regulatory, legislative and accounting standard issues as they arise.
  • Raise the awareness of council members regarding non-position-relevant regulatory and legislative issues that warrant the attention and comments from credit unions in general.  

Action Items – To achieve those goals the following activities/timing will take place, with the support of the committee members and CUNA staff:

Comment Calls: Determine which CUNA Comment calls, Final Rules, Advance Notices of Proposed Rulemaking and Technical Bulletins should be prepared and e-mailed to the membership, which ones should be posted to the CFO Council website and which should be passed to other more position-specific councils.

Informational Alerts: Post informational alerts of non-position-relevant regulatory and legislative issues as the committee becomes aware of them (as deemed necessary)

Educational Support: Provide educational materials online for access by the membership (as deemed necessary)

Sponsorship Committee

Chair -Joan Hill

Mission –Attract and retain relationships with quality vendors interested in sponsoring the CFO Council through multiple opportunities such as financial support enhanced with educational support including pre-conference workshops, mini workshops, breakout sessions, webinars, white papers, Financial Flashes, and other forms of educational materials as needed. 

Key Functions –Develop strategies and take necessary actions that find new sponsor relationships while nurturing existing ones.

  • Identify and contact vendors to determine areas of expertise and interest.
  • Support efforts to attract and retain sponsors
  • Determine actions /resources to increase and enhance sponsor involvement
  • Conduct thank you reception at the conference to celebrate and thank sponsors for their support as well as encourage feedback for an improved experience
  • Conduct a post conference sponsor survey to measure satisfaction and discover new ideas to add value for the sponsors
  • Review and recommend changes to augment current sponsor agreements or benefits

Time commitment –Monthly conference calls (60 minutes each) as needed.

Annual Goal –The Sponsor Committee has the following goals for 2012:

  • Meet or exceed budget of $191,000
  • Minimum overall satisfaction rating of 4.0 on a scale of 1-5 for conference sponsors
  • Determine best way to utilize sponsor relationship to provide educational resources for top ten topics identified as most important to membership.

Action Items –To achieve those goals the following activities/timing will take place with the support of the committee members and CUNA staff –

Retention: Follow up e-mails, calls and/or letters to existing sponsors to encourage continued involvement.
Promotion:  Identify and contact prospective sponsors. Encourage full participation in all opportunities for involvement.
Recognition: Support efforts to recognize sponsors for their contributions at conference and other participation. Send thank you letters to all sponsors after the conference.
Survey: Conduct thank you reception at conference to invite feedback for future consideration. Develop survey for post-conference distribution. Discuss results and implement valued improvements.
Overall Benefits: Discuss overall sponsor benefits, potential additions and ways to add value to current sponsors.
